Christmas Tradition
It's Christmas time once again. I could smell it in the air. Everyday I wake up to a chilly christmassy morning. My favorite time of the year indeed! I read somewhere that christmas is just for children. I used to agree with it. But now that I have my own kids, I think that Christmas is for family. I know it's a cliche to say that it's the time for giving and sharing but there is truly no other time of the year where there's so much color of love and happiness.
I remember when we were kids, my mom would wrap up our gifts and put all of it under the christmas tree. But she wouldn't put our names on it for more thrilling effect (but actually she doesn't want us to be constantly checking out and shaking our gifts to find out what's inside). Come December 24, we would all have a hearty dinner. Then we would go visit a park or entertainment centers to watch Christmas shows or just have our pictures taken under gigantic Christmas trees. Before the clock strikes 12, we would hurry home to open our gifts and eat our Noche Buena.
I also remember how I found out the truth about Santa Claus. I think I was 7 or 8, my cousins, siblings and I hung up our socks on the christmas tree. We were all excited on our presents from Santa. The following day, we got candies, lollipops and other goodies. But my little brother got fewer goodies than everyone else so he started to cry. My mom tried to calm him down and brought down a box she kept in her closet. The box contained all the same set of candies we all got. She had no choice but to reveal to us the truth about the Santa myth. While everyone else would cry, I found myself not minding at all!
When I started my own family, I began my own special tradition. Every Christmas eve or day, my kids, hubby and I would have our family picture taken infront of our Christmas tree. After dinner on a Christmas eve, we would hear mass. The old tradition of opening of gifts at 12mn is still the most awaited event. I just love the look of my kids faces everytime they open their presents. And as usual, Noche Buena is waiting on the table. My all-time favorite Christmas delicacies are the ham (especially cooked by my ma-inlaw) and fruit cake. On Christmas day, we would go visit my inlaws and other relatives. This year, I'll introduce my kids to Santa Claus. I already bought big Christmas socks for them. So excited to see their faces when they look inside for Santa's presents.
Despite all the calamities that flooded the country recently and all the disasters terrorism brought to all parts of the world, I truly wish in my heart that everyone would celebrate the Christmas season this year with peace and love the way I have always experienced and known Christmas to be.
